The standard Windows Task Manager provides useful information for your own computer, but it is useless if you want to see the running processes on other machines. If you need to keep an eye on multiple computers, you can use Remote Process Explorer to see their running processes and perform various tasks remotely. The application provides the same functionality as the classical Task Manager, but it comes with its own features as well.

Remote Process Explorer is free for non-commercial use. It comes in a small setup package and you can install it in a few moments. The software works on Windows 2000 and later versions, up to Windows 7.

It is sufficient to install Remote Process Explorer on your own computer, to view remote processes. You can add remote computers and organize them in a tree structure, on the right side of the user interface. A selected machine's processes are displayed on the larger area on the right. Processes are displayed in a tree structure as well, making it easier to see which items are related.

The available options, located on the program's toolbar, can be used to add new computers, create groups, kill selected processes, on any computer, start new ones, prioritize them and more. To add a new computer, you need to add its name or IP address and select a group. You can also start a wizard and follow its instructions. Additionally, you may choose to connect with the current Windows user account, specify a different one, or set the application to prompt for a username and password when you connect.

Besides killing or starting processes or viewing their properties, you can also use a search function to locate specific items instantly. You can also perform a Google search for individual processes. Just select one, click a button and you will find the results on your default web browser. This function is particularly useful if you have never heard of a certain process before or if you suspect that it is a malicious program. Other functions can be found in the software's top menus. You can use them to send messages, shut down or restart a computer and more.

Pros

Familiarity is one of Remote Process Explorer's primary features. You can use it like the standard Windows Task Manager, but on multiple computers, over a network. You may run or kill any processes, perform a Google search for each item and more. Moreover, the software allows you to shut down or restart remote computers and perform other actions as well.

Cons

You have to make a few settings to your operating system, regarding permissions, before connecting to a remote computer. While using Remote Process Explorer, you will never have to run from one computer to another, to see their processes, terminate them or perform other basic tasks.
